Hacking is Obsolete PDF Print E-mail

hackingAs a former hacker (I hacked purely out as an academic exercise), I find it interesting how the domain has evolved. Number theory and various algorithms have come about as to (almost) eliminate brute force attacks. Keep in mind I’m talking about specific target penetration, not DDoS attacks. Does that mean all our data is secure now? Most definitely not.

Hacking has come out of the dark back room and evolved into a social game. What exactly does that entail? Imagine your bank account’s online access. If you forget your password, they can reset it and send it to your email. But what if your email is not working? Most sites have a link to reset it online, as long as you can answer some personal questions (which you setup). Sounds pretty good, until you read about how Sarah Palin was hacked back in 2008. The answers to the challenge questions were found on Wikipedia (high school and birth date). What are your challenge questions? How many of your Facebook “friends” could know what your favorite food is? What city were you born in? What’s your pet’s name?

T'was the week After Christmas... PDF Print E-mail

T'was the week After Christmas...

T'was the week after Christmas, and all through the house,
Every creature was hurting-- even the mouse.
The toys were all broken, their batteries dead;
Santa passed out, with some ice on his head.

Wrapping and ribbons just covered the floor, while
Upstairs the family continued to snore.
And I in my T-shirt, new Reeboks and jeans,
Went into the kitchen and started to clean.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the sink to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the curtains, and threw up the sash.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a little white truck, with an oversized mirror.
The driver was smiling, so lively and grand;
The patch on his jacket said "U.S. POSTMAN."

With a handful of bills, he grinned like a fox
Then quickly he stuffed them into our mailbox.
Bill after bill, after bill, they still came.
Whistling and shouting he called them by name:
"Now Dillard's, now Broadway's, now Penny's and Sears
Here's Levitz's and Target's and Mervyn's -- all here!!

To the tip of your limit, every store, every mall,
Now chargeaway-chargeaway-chargeaway all!"
He whooped and he whistled as he finished his work.

He filled up the box, and then turned with a jerk.
He sprang to his truck and he drove down the road,
Driving much faster with just half a load.
Then I heard him exclaim with great holiday cheer,

"Enjoy what you got ... you'll be paying all year!"

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Net... PDF Print E-mail

I didnt write this from scratch.  I found a version on the 'net and modified it to fit my style.  Please feel free to make comments.  Enjoy!

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Net,
There were hacker's a surfing. Nerds? Yeah, you bet.
The hard drives were stacked by the magnets with care,
Just in case FBI soon would be there.

The newbies were nestled all snug by their screens,
While visions of Java danced in their dreams.
My wife on the sofa thinks I’m a crackpot,
I just finished installing Linux, on my brand new laptop.

When out in the Web there arose such a clatter,
I jumped to the site to see what was the matter.
To a new page my PC flew like a flash,
Then made a slight gurgle. It started to crash!!

I gasped at the thought and started to grouse,
Then turned my head sideways and clicked on my mouse.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
My PC jumped to a page that wasn't quite clear.
When the image resolved, so bright and so quick,
I knew in a moment it must be st_nick1

More rapid than mainframes, more graphics they came,
Then Nick glanced toward my screen, my PC called them by name;
'Now Compaq! Now Acer!', my speaker did reel;
'On Apple! On Gateway!' Santa started to squeal!
'Jump onto the circuits! And into the chip!
Now speed it up! Speed it up! Make this thing hip!'

The screen gave a flicker, he was into my RAM,
Then into my room rose a full hologram!
He was dressed in all red, standing in my home,
Little did I know, I was 'bout to get Pwnd.

He pulled out some discs he had stored in his pack.
Santa looked like a dude who was rarin' to hack!
His eyes, how they twinkled! His glasses, how techno!
This ain't the same Santa that I used to know!

With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head,
Santa soon let me know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, gave my PC a quick poke,
And accessed my C drive with barely a stroke.

He defragged my hard drive, and added a DIMM,
Then threw in some cool games, just on a whim!
He worked without noise, he upgraded by drive!
He change it to a solid state, much to my surprise!

He updated Office, sent old files to recycle,
Then added a screensaver, with a Tron Light Cycle!
My eyes widened a bit, my mouth stood agape,
As he downloaded bootleg DVDs of Stargate!

The drive gave a whirl, as if it were pleased,
St. Nick coyly smiled, the computer appeased.
Then placing his finger on the bridge of his nose,
Santa turned into nothing but ones and zeros!

He flew back into my screen and through my uplink,
Back into the net with barely a blink.
But I heard his sweet voice as he flew from my sight,
'Happy surfing to all, and to all a good byte!'

Merry Christmas everyone!  Hope you got at least a chuckle from that.

Holiday Shopping Tips PDF Print E-mail

I love this time of year. Thanksgiving is a couple days away followed by Black Friday. This year, it seems everyone has a Black Friday ad, even us. Personally, I prefer to do all my shopping from my computer and avoid all the crazies at the malls. If you’re going to shop online this holiday season, there’s a million tips you can find online. Here’s 5 that you won’t find anywhere else:

  1. Most people shop online for two reasons: they want the convenience of shopping at home and they want to get the best deal. If you’re shopping online, make sure that you’re really getting the best price. True, most retail outlets have e-commerce sites. But, most merchandise can be purchased from online-only stores at much cheaper prices. A couple of places I swear by: eBay for great prices and hard to find items. For electronics (if you know EXACTLY what you want) try out www.pricewatch.com. For TV’s, stereos, and the like, no one beats Crutchfield.com. Computer parts, go to newegg.com.
  2. Get money back for stuff you’d buy anyway. Here’s the question: If you’re going to buy something online anyway, why not get some cash back? I’ve heard of many cards that give cash or airline points, but you can also shop through websites that give cash. If you like getting cash back, you should definitely check out eBates. You get and average of 2%, which doesn’t really seem like much…but that’s IN ADDITION TO any coupons or deals that you already get. I’ve been a member for about 9 years and received over $600 cash back. While it’s not a lot per year, it’s a lot more than $0 for things I’d buy anyway. Plus they usually have some great coupons and deals if you are looking. (Side note for guys: The best deal on eBates are coupons for Flowers – 10% cash back and 33% off FTD.com. The best investment EVER.)
  3. Don’t give out your email address unless you have to. Take another look at my ebates account. Notice my email address. Why did I do this? If any spam comes to that address, I know exactly who gave that address out, and I know that I can just kill that address and stop any spam coming to that address without losing the email address I use for business. I do that for every site that wants my email that I don’t trust. (After 9+ years I do trust eBates, but when I signed up, I didn’t know them). If you don’t know how to setup an email alias, give us a call and we’ll walk you through it.
  4. Use a fake credit card. Well, not exactly a fake CC…most banks have what’s called a virtual credit card number. What you do is sign onto your account, and you can get a virtual CC with a specified limit. For example, if you normal card has a $10K limit, you can get a CC number that has online $500. Why? When you go to a site that may be questionable but has a GREAT deal you just can’t pass up, you can use the virtual CC to purchase That $495 LCD Screen. If anyone steals that CC, the most they can get is $5.
  5. Check your statement – Something you should be doing anyway. When it comes to the holidays, make sure to double check your statements. The law limit your liability on stolen CC charges to $50, but if someone runs up charges on your card, it may take days or weeks to get that money back.

Also, let me know if you want to see any buying guides or a specific article in the future...and I'll get right on it.

PS. While your out shopping, please feel to pickup a Samsung Galaxy for me. ;)

Thanks,
Amit
